1-DESCRIBE YOURSELF
I’m like a bowl of Smarties that got dumped on the floor. I’m all over the map. My brain is constantly running at full throttle, which is probably why my interests are no less scattered. I love writing and photography—they both move me in different ways—but then there’s art, science, history, music, and sports. It’s all music, it really is.
2-WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FRUIT FLAVOR?
Strawberry.
3-WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DAY OF THE WEEK?
Pay day.
4-WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TIME OF THE DAY?
Breakfast.
5-ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT PERSON?
Sadly, both. As a photographer, I often capture images in the golden light of dusk or dawn. But as an amateur astronomer, I love the night sky. These hours seriously clash, and sleep is always the victim.
6-WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BREAKFAST MEAL?
Cereal. A big mix of multigrain Cheerios, Crispix, spelt, quinoa, Shreddies, Harvest Crunch, and other oats, with banana, raisins, strawberries, peaches, and blueberries. I eat this every single day.
7-WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR AND WHY?
Blue. Because red and green were taken.
8-WHICH IS YOUR MOST FAVOURITE BOOK EVER?
Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom.
9-WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
Mozart. Vivaldi. Jazz (the good stuff—Kenny G is not the good stuff). Classic Rock.
10-WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE GENRE OF FILMS?
I’ll watch just about anything, really, but the story has to be there. It has to move me.
11-WHICH IS YOUR MOST FAVOURITE PLACE IN THIS EARTH?
Canada. It simply begs to be captured by the lens.
12-WHICH ANIMAL WOULD YOU WANT TO BE AND WHY?
T. Rex. Top of the food chain.
13-IF YOU COULD HAVE A LUNCHEON WITH ANY 3 PEOPLE (REAL OR FICTICIOUS), WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
My mom. I’d give anything to have one more conversation with her. She was an angel on Earth.
Jean-Luc Picard. He embodies everything a man should be. Intelligent, respectable, honorable, and well-educated. And let’s face it, he drives the coolest wheels in the universe. Being an avid amateur astronomer, I can only imagine the conversations we’d have, from probes to planets to greenskinned women.
Da Vinci. He did it all. The quintessential Renaissance Man. It would be the longest lunch in the history of lunches.
14-IF YOU WERE GRANTED 3 WISHES, WHAT WOULD YOU ASK FOR?
A time-travel machine.
A trip through the solar system.
The answer to the question, “Are we alone in the universe?”
15-IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A LONELY BEACH, WHAT ARE THE 5 THINGS THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO SURVIVE?
A western view, for the sunsets.
Dark, starry skies and a telescope.
A fully loaded Kindle with a night light.
Music.
A fine recliner.
16-IF YOU COULD BE ANYONE, WHO WOULD YOU BE?
Jean-Luc Picard. Or Brad Pitt. He seems pretty happy.
17-WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WISH YOU COULD CHANGE IN YOURSELF?
My natural instinct of pessimism. The glass isn’t even half-empty, it’s bone dry. You’re probably not going to print this, are you? I knew it.
18-WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WISH YOU COULD DO IF GIVEN THE CHANCE?
View our precious home from the International Space Station.
19-WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?
I’d photograph the world, retreating to my new home in New Zealand. I’d have special cereals flown in from world-famous cereal chefs.
20-IF YOU KNEW THAT THIS WAS YOUR LAST DAY ON EARTH, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT?
Why are you asking? What have they told you? Tell me!
Seriously, it depends. If it’s Armageddon from some hurtling asteroid, I’d have a picnic with my girlfriend, have a nap in the afternoon, take in a fine dinner and a movie, then make love under the stars. If I’m buying it from some terminal illness, I’d jump out of a plane with no parachute while eating my last bowl of cereal.
21-WERE YOU A NAUGHTY KID OR A NICE KID?
I was a nice kid. Not sure when that changed.
22-WHAT WAS THE HAPPIEST MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE?
I thought that seeing my book, Velvet Rain, in print—in my hands—for the very first time, was it. But that was trumped when I gave my book to my father for his birthday and he read the dedication.
23-WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF 5 YEARS FROM NOW?
Writing. Making images. I don’t see that changing until they pry camera and pen from my cold, dead hands.
24-WHAT IS THE WEIRDEST/CRAZIEST THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE?
Craziest? You mean stupidest? Many years ago, I was this close to being killed on a 100foot high railway trestle. Only a miracle saved me—I might blog about this some day—but long story short, it’s true what they say: You never hear it coming.
25-WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF AN INCREDIBLE WEEKEND?
Discovering a great place and capturing amazing images in the perfect light.
26-WHICH IS THE BEST HOLIDAYS YOU HAVE EVER HAD?
Traveling through Algonquin Park in the fall with my girlfriend. The colours are stunning, the photo opportunities endless. Canoeing for hours, cocooned in this incredible wall of colour, it takes your breath away.
27-HAVE YOU GOT A PHOBIA YOU WANT TO SHARE?
I’m deathly afraid of death. Seriously. It’s why I have to believe in reincarnation. I’m going to run out of time, and living another life is the only way I’m going to get to do all the things I want to do.
28-WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY?
The GreedHeads who are destroying our world. Our economies. Our environment. Our very existence.
29- WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FEEL SAD?
It’s strange. I used to try to distract myself from those feelings, and for the most part, I was always successful. It wasn’t that I didn’t care what had happened, it was more a “shields up” kind of thing—a protection mechanism. But when my mother passed last year, I couldn’t handle it. I broke down several times. What I thought I knew about pain and sadness in the past was thrown out the window. I’ve learned that it’s part of life and we have to experience it fully before moving forward. We have to embrace it to let it go.
30-WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
If I can steal a page from my blog’s bio page, you’ll understand when I say I have lots of heroes. All kinds of inspiration.
Mozart taught me to listen.
Newton taught me to see.
Mitch Albom taught me to say so much in so little.
Clive Barker taught me to imagine—and then to imagine more.
Stephen King taught me the art of the story—how to lie your ass off and make them believe.
Frank Darabont taught me that the heart is enduring.
Sean Penn taught me to put my soul into my work.
James Cameron taught me that magic is real.
The Three Stooges taught me to laugh.
Jean-Luc Picard taught me to be a better human being.
ABOUT MY THRILLER, Velvet Rain
Well, here’s the shameless self-promotion part. I would liken my book to James Cameron’s Titanic, in the sense that there is always this grand, menacing threat lurking there in the shadows, while we are drawn in by the star-crossed fate of Jack and Rose. They bind us; they are the story. Velvet Rain is no different—the real magic is the arc between a tortured soul, Kain Richards, and the delicate fabric of the lives of those he touches. While certainly a thriller, my novel is, at its heart, a deeply moving story with a life lesson.
